Phone positioning
In order to record the gaits of your ride as accurately as possible, we highly recommend riding with your phone secured tightly against your leg or torso. To help minimize any excess bouncing or movement (and improve accuracy), it often helps to keep your phone in a tight fitting pocket or band.
Equilab primarily uses the movement of your phone, and not your riding speed, to detect the horse's gait. (Learn more in this article.) For this reason, it's important that the motion of your device matches the motion of the horse.
For Drivers
Since Equilab uses the movement of the phone to detect the gaits, drivers will need to attach their devices to the horse that is pulling in order to accurately track gaits. While this is possible, please note that such readings are likely to be inaccurate (given the excess movement of the device while riding) and that this approach risks damaging your device.
For this reason, when you select "Driving" as your training type, we provide the ability to enter gaits manually.
Troubleshooting
If you are riding with your phone in a secure position that moves in synch with your horse, yet the gait detection is not working well, please review the following additional materials on gait detection:
- Some segments of the training gets the wrong gait
- I get no or almost no gait at all on the whole training
