Public and private trails, and the trail map on our website

Who sees a public or private trail, which public trails show on Equilab's website, and how to make a trail private.

Every trail you create in Equilab is either public or private. Here's who can see each kind, which public trails also show on the trail map on our website, and how to change a trail's visibility.

Who can see public and private trails

  • Public trail: all Equilab users can see and ride it in the app, and they see your name on it if you've added your name to Equilab. Public trails in the US and the UK also show on our website, without the creator's name.

  • Private trail: only you and friends you share the trail with can see it. Sharing needs Premium: see Premium trail tools: share, filter, export and ride offline. Private trails never show on our website.

The trail map on our website

All public trails in the US and the UK also show on Equilab's website, on the trail pages for the US and the UK. Anyone can view these trails, even without the Equilab app. Public trails in other countries show only in the app.

For each trail, the website shows its name, location, length, estimated time, description and any photos added to the trail. It doesn't show who created the trail: it only says the trail was added by an Equilab user.

Because the website is public, these trails can also be found through internet search engines such as Google. Private trails never show on the website. If you don't want a trail of yours to be found online, make it private.

Some trails should always be private:

Trails on private land

If a trail crosses private land, make it Private. Then the route isn't public in the app or on our website, which helps prevent confusion and trespassing.

Make a public trail private

You can change the visibility of any trail you created:

  1. Open the Track tab.

  2. Tap the bookmark button in the upper left corner on iPhone, or in the upper right corner on Android, to see your trails.

  3. In your Created Trails list, tap the trail.

  4. Tap the three dots in the top right corner.

  5. Tap Edit.

  6. At the bottom, switch the visibility to Private.

  7. Tap Save.

The trail is now private, so only you and friends you share it with can see it. To make a private trail public, follow the same steps and switch the visibility to Public. For the details you can add to a trail, see Create a trail from your ride.
