Where to carry your phone while riding

Equilab reads gaits from how your phone moves. Keep it tight against your body: the best places to carry it and what to avoid.

Equilab detects your horse's gaits from how your phone moves, not from your speed. Where you carry the phone decides how accurate the gaits on your trainings are.

The best places to carry your phone

Keep your phone tight against your body so it moves with you and your horse and doesn't bounce on its own:

  • Best: a tight-fitting pocket that holds the phone against your upper leg, chest or abdomen.

  • Also works well: a sports armband that holds the phone against your upper arm.

  • Avoid: a loose pocket, a bag, or anywhere the phone can bounce. Movement out of sync with your horse leads to wrong gaits.

Distance and speed come mainly from GPS, so also check your phone settings: see Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.

Other things that affect gaits

Phone position isn't the only thing that affects gaits. Also check:

  • Start with a well-charged phone. Most phones limit sensor data after a while to save energy, which can affect gait detection.

  • Set the right horse type for a gaited horse. Tölt is only detected when the horse type is Icelandic Horse. See Tölt isn't showing for my gaited horse.

Carriage driving and other non-mounted trainings

A phone you carry while you're not mounted can't detect your horse's gaits. Equilab never detects gaits on non-mounted training types, such as driving, even with the phone attached to the horse. You can add the gaits by hand when you finish the training or when you edit it, but Gait Segments isn't available for non-mounted trainings. To get gaits detected on a drive, choose a mounted training type and attach your phone securely to the horse. For more, see Record non-mounted trainings.

If the gaits still look wrong

If your phone was tight against your body and the gaits still look wrong, see Some gaits on my ride are wrong or My ride has no gaits. Some phones have lower-quality motion sensors, which limits accuracy: see Which phones work best with Equilab.
