Some gaits on my ride are wrong

Trot showing as canter? Check how you carry your phone, interruptions and your horse type. With Premium, correct the training.

If parts of a training show the wrong gait, for example trot shown as canter, these checks help you get accurate gaits on your next trainings. With Premium, you can also correct the gaits on a saved training.

When your phone is set up and carried correctly, Equilab typically detects gaits with 90% accuracy or better.

Get more accurate gaits

Check these in order:

  1. Check whether the training was interrupted. If your phone stopped Equilab during the training, the motion data has gaps and gaits can be wrong. See My ride stopped recording or was cut short.

  2. Check where you carried your phone. Equilab detects gaits from your phone's movement, not your speed. Keep the phone tight against your body, in a tight pocket on your leg or torso or in an arm band on your upper arm. A phone that moves around in a loose pocket or bag is a common cause of wrong gaits. See Where to carry your phone while riding.

  3. Check your horse type. If you ride an Icelandic horse, its horse type must be Icelandic Horse, or tölt isn't detected. See "If you ride a gaited horse" below.

  4. Check your phone settings. Make sure your phone is set up as described in Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.

  5. Restart your phone. Turn your phone off for 10 to 15 minutes, then turn it on again.

  6. Reinstall Equilab. First check that all your trainings are in Profile > Trainings: a training that hasn't uploaded yet can be lost when you delete the app. Then delete only the app, not your Equilab account, install it again and log in. For the full steps, see My ride has no gaits.

Horses with gaits that are harder to detect

On some horses, gaits are harder for Equilab to detect:

If you ride a Shetland pony, a retired trotter or an Andalusian

Equilab is known to often have trouble detecting gaits on Shetland ponies, retired trotters and Andalusian horses.

If gaits are often wrong on your horse, contact support and tell us your horse's breed and which gaits are wrong. This information helps us improve gait detection.

If you ride a gaited horse

Horses with more than the three basic gaits are harder for Equilab to detect. Equilab detects walk, trot and canter on every horse, and tölt only on horses whose horse type is Icelandic Horse. Other gaits aren't detected.

If you ride an Icelandic horse, set its horse type to Icelandic Horse and choose the horse before you start tracking. See Tölt isn't showing for my gaited horse.

Correct the gaits on a saved training

With Gait Segments, you can change the gait of any part of a mounted training you've already saved.

⭐ Gait Segments is a Premium feature. On the free plan, tapping Gait Segments asks you to start Premium. To try Premium, see Start Premium or a free trial.
