My ride has no gaits

No gaits on a training? Check the training type, interruptions and how you carried your phone, and see what you can do about that ride.

If a training recorded the right time and distance but shows no gaits, these checks help you get gaits recorded again on your next trainings.

Get gaits recorded again

Check these in order:

  1. Check the training type. Non-mounted training types, such as driving or lunging, never detect gaits, even with the phone attached to the horse. You can add the gaits by hand when you finish the training, or later when you edit it. For detected gaits, choose a mounted training type before you start tracking. If you drive, you can choose a mounted training type and attach your phone to the horse. See Record non-mounted trainings.

  2. Check whether the training was interrupted. If your phone stopped Equilab during the training, for example with a notification that the training was interrupted, the motion data has gaps and gaits can be missing. See My ride stopped recording or was cut short.

  3. Check where you carried your phone. Equilab detects gaits from your phone's movement, not your speed. Keep the phone tight against your body, in a tight pocket on your leg or torso or in an arm band on your upper arm. If the phone moves around in a loose pocket or bag, Equilab can't make sense of the motion data. See Where to carry your phone while riding.

  4. Check your phone settings. Make sure your phone is set up as described in Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.

  5. Restart your phone. Turn your phone off for 10 to 15 minutes, then turn it on again.

  6. Reinstall Equilab. Delete only the app, not your Equilab account: deleting your account is permanent and can't be undone. First open Profile > Trainings and check that all your trainings are there: a training that hasn't uploaded yet can be lost when you delete the app. Under Profile > Settings > Account, check which login methods your account uses, so you can log in again. Then delete the Equilab app from your phone, install it again and log in. Your uploaded trainings and horses are saved to your account and come back when you log in.

Two setups always limit gait detection:

If you rode with Apple Watch Standalone or Android watch Standalone

A training recorded with Apple Watch Standalone or Android watch Standalone, with only your watch and without your phone, has no gaits. Gaits always come from your phone, so a watch on its own can't detect them. Standalone mode is a Premium feature on both watches.

To get gaits, take your phone along and record in Remote mode, where the watch and your phone record together:

If your phone has no gyroscope

Some phones don't have a gyroscope, which limits the motion data Equilab can collect. If your phone has no gyroscope, Equilab shows a warning the first time you track, saying gaits may not be accurate. Your trainings still record, but gaits are less accurate.

A few phones also aren't sensitive enough for gait detection. This can't be fixed in the app, but it's rare, so go through the checks above first. To choose a phone that works well, see Which phones work best with Equilab.

What you can do about the training without gaits

A training with a mounted training type that was saved without gaits can't get gaits afterward, not even with Gait Segments. If you want the training saved with gaits, add a manual training with the correct details and the time in each gait. See How to add a manual training.

On a training with a non-mounted training type, you can add the gaits by hand when you edit the training. See Record non-mounted trainings.
