If your training stopped recording, was interrupted, or only the first few minutes were saved, your phone most likely closed Equilab in the background to save battery. Work through these checks in order: they're the ones our support team uses.
Before you start: find the training in Profile > Trainings. If it's there but shorter than it should be, keep reading.
If it isn't there, force-close Equilab (swipe it away in the app switcher), open it again and check Trends > All trainings, the Calendar tab and Profile > Trainings. Still missing? See A ride or horse is missing.
Check your phone's settings first
Most trainings stop early because a phone setting lets the phone close Equilab. Open the section for your phone below. The full setup is in Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.
If you have an iPhone
If you have an iPhone
Open Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Equilab. Choose While Using the App (not Never or Ask Next Time) and turn on Precise Location.
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options (on some iPhones: Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options) and turn off Low Data Mode.
Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it on for Equilab.
If your iPhone is almost out of storage, free up some space.
If you have an Android phone
If you have an Android phone
Menu names differ a little between brands.
Open Settings > Apps > Equilab > Battery (or App Battery Usage) and choose Unrestricted, not Optimized. This turns off battery optimization for Equilab.
Open Settings > Battery and turn off Power saving.
Open Settings > Battery and Device Care > Battery > Background usage limits (on some phones Device Care and App Power Management). Turn off Put Unused Apps to Sleep, and remove Equilab from Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps if it's listed.
Open Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver and turn it off.
Open Settings > Apps > Equilab and turn off Pause app activity if unused (on some phones Remove permissions and free up space).
Open Settings > Location > App permissions > Equilab. Choose Allow only while using the app and turn on Use precise location.
Before each ride, turn off Wi-Fi, so your phone uses mobile data instead of weak or changing Wi-Fi at the stable.
Some phones can switch these settings back after an Android update or after you reinstall Equilab, so check them again if trainings start stopping. Many brands also have their own battery savers: see Keep Equilab running on your Android phone: settings by brand.
If you track with a watch
If you track with a watch
Apple Watch
On your iPhone, open the Watch app > Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
Turn on Background App Refresh, then turn it on for Equilab in the list.
Don't swipe Equilab away on your iPhone while you track with your Apple Watch: the training can be interrupted even though the watch still shows it as running. After a Standalone training, keep Equilab open on the watch until the cloud icon at the bottom right of the screen disappears, which means the training has uploaded.
Android watch
Check the Android phone settings above.
Make sure you have the latest version of Equilab on both your phone and your Android watch.
On your phone, open the Wear OS app (on a Samsung phone, Galaxy Wearable) and check that your watch shows as connected. If it doesn't, tap the watch's name to reconnect.
If the watch still doesn't connect, restart your phone and your watch, and check that battery optimization is off for Equilab. If that doesn't help, unpair the watch and pair it again.
Don't swipe Equilab away on your phone while you track with your Android watch.
If you use Safety Tracking
If you use Safety Tracking
Keep mobile data on for the whole ride, and don't use airplane mode. Equilab keeps tracking without a connection, but your Safety Contacts stop getting your position and alerts.
Check what you do during the ride
What you do while tracking can also make your phone close Equilab:
Leave Equilab running. Don't swipe it away in the app switcher or switch to other apps. Locking the screen is fine.
Take photos with the camera icon in Equilab (iPhone, and Android 10 or later), not your phone's Camera app. See Take photos during a ride.
Close other GPS apps, such as maps or other trackers, before you start.
Use the stats screen, not the map. The stats screen uses less battery.
If your training still stops
After you change these settings, Equilab should track your next training from start to finish. If it still stops early, contact us in the app from Profile > Settings > Contact Support, and our support team will look into it. Please include:
the date and time of the training, and roughly when it stopped
what you did right before it stopped, if you remember (for example, opened another app)
whether you used a watch, and what you've already tried
Frequently asked questions
Riders often ask these after a training stops early.
Can I continue a training that was interrupted?
Can I continue a training that was interrupted?
No. When your phone closes Equilab mid-ride, Equilab shows a message in the app that the training was interrupted, and the part tracked so far is saved. To track the rest of the ride, start a new training: the two parts stay separate. If you track with a watch, the message shows only on your phone.
Does airplane mode stop Equilab from tracking?
Does airplane mode stop Equilab from tracking?
No. Equilab keeps tracking in airplane mode. Calls, messages and Safety Tracking updates stop until you turn it off.
