If the path on your training map or the distance looks wrong, a phone setting or riding indoors is usually the cause. Work through these checks in the order our support team uses.
Before you start: this article is for trainings that recorded from start to finish but show the wrong path or distance.
If the training stopped early or only the first minutes were recorded, see My ride stopped recording or was cut short.
If the distance is only a little different from another app or trail markers, see Why your distance differs from other apps or trail markers.
Check your phone's settings first
Location, battery and data settings are the most common cause. Open the section for your phone below. The full setup is in Essential Device & App Settings for Equilab to Work Properly.
If you have an iPhone
If you have an iPhone
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Equilab.
Choose While Using the App (not Never or Ask Next Time).
Turn on Precise Location.
Open Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options (on some iPhones: Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options) and turn off Low Data Mode.
If you have an Android phone
If you have an Android phone
Menu names differ a little between brands.
Open Settings > Location > App permissions (or tap Equilab under Recent access) and choose Equilab.
Choose Allow only while using the app.
Turn on Use precise location.
Open Settings > Battery and turn off Power saving.
Open Settings > Apps > Equilab > Battery and choose Unrestricted.
Open Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver and turn it off.
Before each ride, turn off Wi-Fi (swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Wi-Fi icon), so your phone uses mobile data instead of weak or changing Wi-Fi at the stable.
If an Android training shows almost no distance or speed, your phone may be limiting Equilab in the background. Follow the Android steps in My ride stopped recording or was cut short.
When the location setting is right on an iPhone, it looks like this:
iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Equilab
Check whether you rode indoors
Equilab measures distance, speed and the path with GPS. In an indoor arena, the roof and walls block the GPS signal, so the distance, speed and path of an indoor training, or of the indoor part of a training, can't be accurate. Gaits come from the movement of your phone, not from GPS, so an indoor training can still show gaits.
Close other apps and charge your phone
Before you start tracking, close the apps you aren't using, especially other GPS apps such as maps or other trackers. Start your ride with a well-charged phone.
Reset your phone's GPS
If your settings are right and you rode outdoors, reset your phone's GPS: turn your phone off for 10 to 15 minutes, keep it still, and then turn it on again.
Check your phone's age and condition
A phone's GPS and sensors wear out over time, especially if the phone has been dropped. Equilab still works on older phones, but tracking may be less accurate. For the best results, we recommend a phone that is less than 5 years old. To compare your phone with our recommendations, see Which phones work best with Equilab.
If the path or distance is still wrong
Contact us in the app from Profile > Settings > Contact Support. Our support team can check your training on our side. So we can help quickly, include:
the date and time of the training
a screenshot of the training's map
whether you rode indoors, outdoors or both
what you've already tried
Frequently asked questions
Here is a question riders often ask about GPS and Wi-Fi.
Should I turn off Wi-Fi on my iPhone before a ride?
Should I turn off Wi-Fi on my iPhone before a ride?
No. Turning off Wi-Fi is only a tip for Android phones, so they use mobile data instead of weak or changing Wi-Fi at the stable. On an iPhone, you can leave Wi-Fi on.
