Which phones work best with Equilab

What a phone needs to track well with Equilab: the sensors for gaits, enough memory, and brands that often close the app.

Equilab records your trainings with your phone's GPS and motion sensors, so your phone decides how well your path, distance and gaits are tracked. Here's what to look for in an iPhone or Android phone, and which phones are known to have problems.

The sensors Equilab uses

Equilab uses three sensors in your phone to track a training:

  • GPS measures where you ride and how fast.

  • Accelerometer measures motion, for gaits and turns.

  • Gyroscope measures motion, for gaits and turns.

Almost all smartphones have GPS and an accelerometer, but some don't have a gyroscope, which limits the motion data Equilab can collect. If your phone is missing one of these sensors, Equilab shows a notification the first time you track, saying gaits may not be accurate. Your trainings still record.

What we recommend

For the most accurate tracking, we recommend a phone that:

  • has a gyroscope, for more accurate gait detection

  • has at least 8 GB of RAM (memory), so Equilab can process location and motion data without your phone closing the app

  • is less than 5 years old, because GPS and motion sensors wear out over time, especially if the phone has been dropped

Equilab also works on older phones, but tracking may be less accurate.

Phones known for tracking problems

We see tracking problems more often on these phones:

  • Xiaomi 13T: a sensor issue makes gait detection less accurate.

  • Oppo, Realme and Huawei: the phone's system often closes Equilab during a training, which interrupts tracking.

You can install and use Equilab on Oppo, Realme and Huawei phones. Changing the settings for your phone's brand helps keep Equilab running: see Keep Equilab running on your Android phone: settings by brand.

Features that need a minimum system version

A few Equilab features need a minimum system version on your phone:

  • Posture Coach: an iPhone with iOS 15 or later.

  • The Equilab Lock Screen widget: an iPhone with iOS 16 or later.

  • Taking photos with the camera in Equilab during a training: Android 10 or later on Android phones.

If you can't find Equilab in the App Store or Google Play

Equilab is available in the App Store and on Google Play in almost every country. If you can't find Equilab there, the most common reason is that your phone isn't supported: its hardware can't track trainings well, or its system version is too old. Update your phone to the latest system version it offers, then search again.

Watches

Equilab also works on Apple Watch Series 3 and later, and on Android watches with Wear OS. See Set up Equilab on your Apple Watch or Set up Equilab on your Android watch.
