How Equilab detects gaits

Modified on Mon, 2 Oct, 2023 at 6:04 PM

Equilab relies on the movement of your device (as a proxy for the movement of your horse) in order to identify and record the gaits at which you are riding. By tracking the motion of phones, and filtering/processing it with machine learning, the app is able to quite accurately detect your gaits - and information such as the beat of steps - over the course of your rides.

If you have a gaited horse, be sure to indicate in your horse's profile that it is Gaited/Icelandic to ensure that tolt is tracked by the app.

Finally, it is important to note that because the gaits are not measured based on speed, gait detection will not work if your device encounters issues with the accelerometers/gyroscope in your phone that sense its movement.
