Equilab is compatible with Apple Watch (generations 3+). The guide below will walk you through setting up your watch and using it to track your trainings in Equilab!
Setup
To use the Equilab app on your Apple Watch, install the watch on your phone first. Once you are logged into your Equilab account on your phone, you can install the app on your watch by taking the following steps:
- Open the Apple Watch app on your phone

- Scroll to the "Available Apps" section
- Find Equilab and tap "Install"

After you've successfully installed Equilab on your Apple Watch, you'll need to grant permission for Equilab to access your Health data (collected by your Apple Watch, as part of Apple's "Health" app). This will enable you to start tracking using your watch.
Usage
Once you've set up Equilab on your Apple Watch, there are two ways to use it:
- Remote
The Remote mode is the default option, and you can use it for free. It requires you to bring your phone with you to record your training. In this mode, you'll be able to start or stop the recording of your ride, and view your current distance, average speed, time, and gaits on your wrist while training.
To stop the training, simply swipe left. To open the gaits page, swipe right - here you can see how long your horse has been in walk, trot, and canter; tölt will also appear if your horse is set as Icelandic. You can also delete a training directly from the Apple Watch: from the summary page, scroll down to find the option.
If you’re on the Premium plan and have enabled Safety Tracking or connected a Polar Heart Rate Monitor, their icons will appear on the watch whenever those features are active on your phone. (Learn more about activating Safety Tracking here and Polar Heart Rate Monitor here.) These icons are only visible when tracking with your phone; if the features are turned off, no icons will be shown on the watch. - Standalone
The Standalone mode allows you to record your trainings with only your watch, and leave your phone at the stable. You can enable the Standalone mode in the Equilab settings on your phone by going to Profile > Settings, then pressing Apple Watch Standalone. It requires you to be subscribed to our Premium plan to turn on this option. You can also delete a training directly from the Apple Watch: from the summary page, scroll down to find the option.
When using Standalone mode, Safety Tracking, Polar Heart Rate icons, and gaits are not available and will not be tracked. Only time (displayed as Hours:Minutes:Seconds), distance, average speed, and your path will be recorded and visible. You can swipe left to finish a training; swiping right to see the gaits is not available in this mode. Check out this short video to learn more.
When you finish a Standalone ride, you'll want to ensure that you don't close the Equilab app before it is uploaded and saved. If your Watch has cellular service, this will happen automatically (though it can take a little while if you have limited connection or a long training).
If it does not upload, be sure to keep the Equilab app open on your Watch until it reconnects to your phone and uploads the training via your phone's internet connection (WiFi or Cellular). You'll know when the training has been uploaded because the small upload symbol — a cloud with an upward arrow — will disappear from the bottom right corner of the watch's screen. The number next to the symbol indicates how many trainings are waiting to be uploaded.
When your training uploads, you'll also get a notification on your iPhone that you can tap to edit the training. Of course, you can also go back to make edits — just like you would for any other training.
Tracking rides standalone with the Apple Watch does not currently support the Safety Tracking feature, so you'll need to ride with your phone for contacts to be able to follow your rides in real-time and receive notifications.
Edit training and Select a horse
If you want to add a note, add or select a horse, or add the ground type to a training, you'll need to open it from the app and then press "Edit" in the training view.
Preventing the App from Closing Automatically
It's important to make sure that the Equilab Apple Watch app stays actively running while you're riding to ensure your training is fully tracked. If the app is shut off by your watch, it will stop the recording of your ride. Take the following steps on your iPhone to update the settings and help prevent this from happening accidentally:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone

- Go to General

- Tap on the "Background App Refresh" tab

- Tap on the toggle next to it to (make it green and) enable the feature

- Find the Equilab app in the list of apps below and tap on the toggle next to the Equilab app to make it green
