Horse and rider energy calculations

Horse Energy

Every horse is unique, so the energy calculation will always be an estimate (and not perfectly accurate your horse). These calculations are based on several inputs, including:

  • how much your horse weighs,
  • the weight it has to carry (equipment, and you),
  • the distance/time of your training, and
  • the gaits/speeds at which your horse rode.

We recommend using these energy estimates as directional guidance on how your horse's training routines impact its energy expenditure. If you want to read more about calculating your horse energy consumption, we suggest reading Nutrition of the Exercising Horse by Markku T. Saastamoinen.

Rider energy

Estimates of rider energy are available to users who have connected Equilab to their device's native health app. These are based on Apple/Android's own calculations derived from the type of activity and the movement of your phone (and therefore, implied for your body) during the ride.
